Good service, easy to use

Hired a contractor through Oyster. Onboarding was quick. Payments were smooth. Had a minor issue with a document, but support fixed it fast. Will use again.

Great value for global hiring

I was looking to hire our first international employee and Oyster's 'first hire free' offer really caught my eye. It was exactly what we needed to test the waters without a huge upfront commitment. The platform fee discount for the first year also made a big difference to our budget. I compared them to a few other services, and Oyster gave the most bang for our buck, especially with those initial savings. The only slight drawback was that setting up the account took a bit longer than I expected.

Great savings on first hire

As a startup, every penny counts, so I was really looking for the best deal. Oyster offered the 'first hire free' for a period, which was a huge draw. It really helped us get our international team member set up without the immediate overhead. The onboarding process was clear and I felt like I got a lot of value for literally no initial cost. I also looked into their employment cost calculator which was super helpful for budgeting. It felt like a smart investment even before paying anything. The only thing is I wish they made it clearer upfront how long the 'free' period actually lasts without digging a bit.

Good value, minor hiccups

We signed up for Oyster's Global Payroll and Contractor Management. The platform fee seemed competitive, especially with the annual billing discount we got. Setting up the first contractor was pretty quick, and the multi-currency payments feature works as advertised, which is a big plus for our international team. I did find the expense management interface a little less user-friendly than I expected; it took a few tries to get everyone on board with it. Customer service was helpful when I had a query about a payment discrepancy, responding within a day. Overall, it's a good solution for our needs, offering decent value, but that expense tool could use some polishing.

Easy to get started

Needed to hire someone overseas pretty fast and Oyster made it really simple. I used their Employer of Record service. Everything was online, no fuss. The person I hired was set up in about a week, which felt quick. It was much easier than trying to figure out all the local rules myself. Only minor thing was finding the exact health insurance details took a few clicks.

Smooth global hiring experience

I used Oyster for hiring a new team member in Germany, specifically for their Employer of Record service. The onboarding platform was intuitive and guided us through the necessary steps. We utilized the localized employment contracts which saved a lot of legal back-and-forth. Delivery of the actual employee contract for signing took about 3 business days, which was reasonable. Their support team was responsive when I had a question about statutory benefits in Germany, though sometimes the initial chat bot could be a bit slow to connect me to a human. The quality of the advice and the streamlined process made what could have been a complex international hire feel straightforward. The time off tracking feature worked well, but I wish there was a more direct integration with our existing HRIS from the start without extra setup. Overall, a very solid platform for global expansion.

Solid platform, needs better onboarding

We used Oyster to hire two remote employees in different countries, and overall, it's been a positive experience. The Employer of Record service is comprehensive, covering payroll and benefits seamlessly, which saved us a lot of headaches with global compliance. The multi-currency payments also worked flawlessly. However, the initial onboarding process for our internal team felt a little overwhelming with all the documentation. A more streamlined guide or a dedicated onboarding specialist would make a big difference there. Delivery of the remote work equipment to one employee was also a little delayed, took 4 days to reach Austin after shipping.

Good value for first hire

I was looking for the best deal to hire internationally, and Oyster's 'first hire free' offer really caught my eye. It helped me save a significant amount on onboarding our new developer. The platform fee felt reasonable after that initial discount, making the whole experience feel worth the investment. Setting up the account took a little longer than expected, but overall, it was a practical choice.

Anyone know how long it really takes to onboard an employee with Oyster? Website says 'days' but my experience is slower.

M MariaGonzalez 6 days ago ✓ Best Answer
Depends heavily on the country. For a US hire, it was pretty quick, like 3-4 days. But for a hire in Brazil, it took almost 2 weeks because of local document collection and translation stuff.

R RahulPatel 6 days ago
That makes sense. We're hiring in Germany, so maybe similar delays.

T TomJackson 6 days ago
Yeah, I had a similar experience with a UK hire vs. one in Vietnam. Big difference.

We had some issues with background checks taking longer than expected through their third-party provider. Added a few extra days.

R RahulPatel 6 days ago
Didn't even think about that. Thanks for the heads up.

My biggest holdup was getting the employee to actually fill out their part quickly. Oyster was waiting on them, not the other way around.
3
B BenCarter 6 days ago
Totally. Had one guy take a week just to upload his passport.

Oh, that's a good point. I'll follow up with our candidate.

My 'first hire free' deal isn't showing up at checkout for Oyster. Anyone else?

L LiamMurphy 1 month ago ✓ Best Answer
Yeah, I had that. It's not a 'code' you enter. It was applied to my first invoice automatically after I completed onboarding the employee. Took a bit for it to show.

Oh, so it's not like a coupon box? That's confusing.

Mine showed up after I talked to sales. They had to manually link it to my account I think.

Hmm, I'm still in the demo phase, but I saw something about it being for specific plans or regions only. Did you check the fine print?

Good point. I just assumed it was universal.

I used a startup program discount instead. Maybe those can't be stacked? Just a thought.

Yeah, I heard they don't let you stack codes. That's a bummer.

Does Oyster help with the health insurance part for remote employees? That's a big headache to sort out internationally.

B Brandon Flores 1 month ago
Oh yeah, totally. That's one of the main reasons we went with them. They've got plans set up in different countries, so you just pick what works. Takes a huge load off.
6
E Emma 1 month ago
They do! It's part of their benefits package. Made it way easier than trying to figure out local insurance markets myself.

Is there a way to get a discount if we pay for the whole year upfront instead of monthly?

R Rachel A. 1 month ago
Yeah, I think they usually offer a discount for annual billing. Most of these platforms do. You'd have to talk to their sales rep to get the exact percentage, but it's pretty standard.
3
P Paul H. 1 month ago
Definitely. We got a bit of a break when we committed to a year. Always worth asking for if you're planning on sticking around.

Hey, thinking about using Oyster for hiring abroad. How long does it usually take to get someone onboarded and actually working?

C Chris T. 1 month ago
From my experience, it's pretty quick. Like, a few days to a week once everything's signed, depending on the country specifics and if they need any crazy documents.
5
E Elizabeth Smith 1 month ago
Yeah, I just did it for someone in Portugal. Took about 5 business days for them to be officially onboarded and ready to go after we had all their info.

How long does it actually take to get an employee onboarded through Oyster? We need someone up and running pretty quick in Germany.

H Hannah Campbell 1 month ago
It can vary a bit based on the country and if they need a work permit, but for an EU country like Germany, it was surprisingly fast for us. Like, a couple of weeks to get everything sorted, contracts and all.

A Amanda Scott 1 month ago
My experience was a bit longer, maybe 3-4 weeks, but we had a really specific role and some background checks took a while. Oyster's part of it was usually pretty efficient though.

Comparing Oyster with Deel for global hiring. Anyone used both and have thoughts on which one is better for a small tech startup?

L Linda Sanchez 4 weeks ago
I've only used Oyster, but my buddy at another startup used Deel. He said Deel felt a bit more complex for just basic EOR stuff, whereas Oyster was super user-friendly right from the start. Might just be personal preference though.

M Matt Mitchell 4 weeks ago
We switched from Deel to Oyster actually. Found Oyster's platform a lot cleaner and their support was more responsive for us. Deel was fine, but Oyster just clicked better for our small team.

Thinking about using Oyster for our first international hire. Does the 'first hire free' thing apply to any role, or is there a catch?

L Lisa Garcia 4 weeks ago
From what I remember when I signed up, it's usually for a set period like a few months, not unlimited. You should def confirm the exact terms, but it was for our first employee no matter the role.

N Nick Hernandez 4 weeks ago
I got that deal and it was pretty straightforward, no weird catches beyond the time limit. Saved us a good chunk of change starting out.

Is Oyster actually legit for hiring folks overseas? Seen some bad stuff about other platforms and don't want to get scammed.

A Amanda T. 1 month ago
Yeah, they're legit. Used them for hiring someone in Spain last year and everything was by the book. My legal team checked them out too.
0
M Mary W. 1 month ago
Totally, they're like one of the big names in the EOR space. I think they're pretty well regarded, certainly not some fly-by-night operation.

Are there any discounts for non-profits? We're a small charity trying to expand our reach and every bit helps.

A Amanda Hill 1 month ago
I'm pretty sure I saw something about non-profit discounts when I was poking around their site. Worth asking their sales team directly, I bet they have something.
6
D Donna T. 1 month ago
My friend runs a non-profit and she mentioned they got a discount for using Oyster, so yeah, definitely ask! It's not always super obvious on the main page.
